 Good rain felt all over

Good rain felt all over

It would be fair to say that one of the major talking points throughout the industry at the moment is the wonderful widespread rain which has been so beneficial to so much of the country.

Most areas have received some rain with Nevertire and surrounding districts touted as having some of the best falls.

Livestock numbers and overall supply should see a lightening as producers now have the option to improve or grow out their consignments, before sending them to market.

Was noted in one of the rural journals that the AA company was well advanced with their plans to build a state of the art beef slaughtering facility at a centre some 50kms south of Darwin.

The AA company is one of the major players in Australian beef with huge numbers of cattle carrying their brand, vast operations in this part of northern Australia already in place plus an integrated marketing chain which sells their beef product world wide.

Over the generations other business people have tried (mostly unsuccessfully) to run abattoirs in the top end.

Many reasons for failure in the past have been well documented and include the lack of suitable cattle, the fact that the wet season allows for livestock movement for only about six months of the year and in more recent decades the attractiveness of very well paid full time employment within the mining industry.

At the same time as the fanfare regarding the new works, it was noted that at least two old abattoirs in the north had been totally decommissioned.

Personally one would hope that this new venture would succeed emphatically so as to create a new way of processing some northern cattle and provide a wonderful opportunity for employment in the north of the country.

Across the globe we see that Brazil’s 50 largest feedlots have increased their numbers on feed by 33 per cent to 1.6 million head.

Most of these lots specialise in a short feeding regime, usually less than 100 days and in the main use by products from the cropping industry such as sugar cane mulch, corn silage and cotton seed.

Some of Brazil’s major players in the processing industry such as our JBS are becoming more involved in this segment as they try to hedge against periods of low supply.

Brazil’s pork producers in recent times suffered a major set back when Russia imposed a total ban on pork products from that country. This caused local exporter in Brazil to embark on a program to secure new markets which were duly found in Hong Kong and the Ukraine which took an extra 271 per cent when compared to the previous year.
