 Queensland shift for Primo

Queensland shift for Primo

One of our major tabloid newspapers recently reported on the new direction to be taken by a company which is a great supporter of Dubbo saleyards and the auction system of livestock.

Primo Smallgoods will shift 600 jobs to Queensland where it intends to amalgamate three factories into one massive 38,000 square foot complex at the cost of $130 million.

Primo, apart from its massive fresh and carton products, is said to be this country’s largest smallgoods manufacturer.

The company kills much of its purchases at Scone and has three to four major factories in Sydney and Newcastle.

This loss of 600 jobs to Queensland is another blow to our state economy which is currently struggling big time and will take Primo’s workforce to almost 1700 people in Queensland.

Premier Anna Bligh officiated at the announcement and suggested that this was the boost Queensland needed for its manufacturing industry to move to the next level.

Chris Clemson of Clemson Hiscox and Co Walgett touched base regarding their forthcoming 11th Annual Walgett and District Sheep Breeders Sale. This sale of note will be conducted on Auction Plus on Tuesday September 20, commencing at 12pm.

With 12,100 sheep catalogued enquiry should be strong as these lines will include some of the best drafts of young sheep available from a district reknown for the quality and health status of its livestock.

There will be large lines of Border Leicester and Dohne-cross mixed sex store lambs.

A strong array of young ewes will also be on offer comprising Merinos, first-cross ewes and Dohnes. Older Dohne first-cross ewes, classed breeders in two lines will also go through the system. Plenty of young Merino wethers, one-year-old, will also be on offer.

Further details available from the selling agents at Walgett phone 6828 3444.

This presents an opportunity to buy quality well-bred sheep and should not be missed.

Please note the date.

Some of the recent figures listed by MLA’s market reporting system shows a dramatic increase in the numbers of lambs sold through the markets which they report on. During every week for the month of August the physical market yarded 780,000 head which was 13 per cent higher than the figure for last August and the highest monthly tally since 2009.

The most dramatic rises occurred in NSW and Victoria. The Central West of NSW accounted for the largest percentage of lambs both for the State and nationally. Dubbo and Forbes combined sold 51 per cent of the State’s total with Wagga Wagga adding another 24 per cent to the State aggregate.
