A statistic of interest from the Meat and Livestock Weekly says that for the week ending October 21 2011 the market saw 160,000 lambs penned with the Eastern States Trade Lamb Indicator (ESTLI) settling at 513c which was 29c higher than the same week in 2010, but it was apparently an astonishing 141c above the five-year average.
Young, new-season lambs accounted for 71 per cent of the ESTLI which was down when compared to this time last year when the figure stood at 87 per cent.
Unfortunately for both processor and producers many pens of young, new-season lambs are now showing dryness in the skin and the signs of grass seed are becoming more prevalent.

The mantle for the world’s largest beef exporter is now a race between Australia, the US and Brazil.
The figures vary depending on whether the authorities use fiscal year numbers or those relevant to a calendar year.
Currently for the first eight months of 2011 Australia with 611,605 tonnes narrowly leads in the US at 592,558 tonnes and Brazil with 535,727 tonnes.
In recent years America has not figured in the beef export race but a very slow domestic economy lacking demand of beef products.
A weak US dollar and a far greater acceptance in overseas markets after many of their health issues appear to have been resolved has led to a 28 per cent rise in beef exports from January to August.
America is now causing serious concern for Australian beef exporters as they make serious in-roads into our markets in Japan and Korea.
We are told that Australia produces about 2.13 million tonnes of beef and veal in 2010-2011 and exported 64.8 per cent of total production whereas America production was 12 million tonnes with exports only accounting for 9.7 per cent of that figure.

Total lamb production for the first eight months of 2011 totalled 260,162 tonnes and for the same period we exported 125,637 tonnes (being 48 per cent). These figures have been recently released and by historical standards are at very high levels. During the same recording period of 2001.
Australia’s export percentage of total lamb production stood at 35 per cent. Our major destinations in the last recording period have been the USA (30,817 tonnes). The Middle East (23,534 tonnes) and Greater China (21,508 tonnes).
