 Sucker lambs dominate yardings

Sucker lambs dominate yardings

The 29th Annual Ashbank Ram Sale was held recently and the agents involved Landmark and HL Milling Thomas and Co both of Dubbo hailed the sale as a great success. The sale catalogued 112 Poll Dorset rams which averaged $1054.91c and 40 White Suffolk rams averaged $995.

The top price of the day was $2050 paid by Ian Ross on behalf of Bugabadah Pastoral Co Gilgandra.

Young sucker lambs have dominated market share in recent days accounting for 54 per cent of national lamb yardings.

Surprisingly while week on week numbers rose by 33 per cent they were however down by almost 20 per cent when compared with the same week last year.

South Australia at 76 per cent of total yardings and Western Australia where some centres estimated as much as 84 per cent led the charge NSW saleyards reported figures of 46 per cent of total yardings.

Another good report on the most recent Narromine store sheep where agents yarded just on 23,000 sheep to a wide spread of buyers. Independent comments indicate that the offering included the strongest line-up of first cross ewes seen at the centre for a very long time.

The top end of the first cross ewe sale was fully firm to dearer with the top price of $240 per head being achieved for a line of August/September 2010 drop ewes August shorn. The best of the balance of these ewes sold in the range of $160 to $212. Unfortunately the depth of buying power was not strong enough to maintain this aggression and pens of lesser ewes met with restricted competition to be quoted on average $30 per head cheaper.

Confidence in the prime lamb market has obviously been restored with the best on offer realising $101.50c. Competition for Merino ewes remain strong with a line of March/April 2010 drop, August shorn topping at $217. Planer types sold from a mare $77 to $144. Merino wethers sold from $44 to $78.50.
