Every year 12 central NSW studs compete for the title of Elders Premier Hogget Ram of the Year.
This year, the winner of the Mid-State Merino competition was a 16.6 micron, 112kg ram from Roseville Park, Dubbo.
First placed ‘RP 9.14’, has some impressive genetics to live up to, with no less than three Grand Champions, a $110,000 ram and a $32,000 ram in his bloodlines.
So far he is more than living up to them, claiming the junior champion ram, Grand Champion medium wool ram and overall champion March-shorn ram at the Bendigo sheep show last month.
Roseville Park principal Matthew Coddington said they had plenty of interest in semen from this ram, selling 1,000 doses already.
“We will now re-shear him for the August shorn competition next year at Dubbo,” Mr Coddington said.
Second-placed ram ‘Dariwell 9.6’ has proved the worth of his sire, home-bred ram from the Darriwell stud, Trundle.
Dariwell principal Russell Jones said he had always been impressed with the performance of the ram, calling him a “top modern sire”.
In third place was the Wealla hogget ram, with a 17.8 micron fleece.
The judge of this year’s competition was Queensland Merino breeder Nigel Brumpton of Mitchell.
The Mid-State Merino field day, a joint effort of the 12 studs involved, will be held on Friday September 3 with displays on-property and at the Peak Hill showground.
