The most up to-date and modern, self-catering accommodation for cancer oatients in NSW was officially opened on December 12.
Set in an idyllic garden location, Western Care Lodge is within walking distance of the Orange Base Hospital and its services, and is the result of fundraising which raised more than $1.2 million from the Orange region, $650,000 from regional communities further afield, $500,000 from the NSW Cancer Council, $1.3 million from the federal government and a gift of services from Orange City Council worth $200,000.
The project took four years to complete.
Mayor of Orange and Cancer Care Western Incorporated patron John Davis said Western Care Lodge is a first-class facility and Cancer Care Western NSW fundraising chair Jan Savage said the day was a "very emotional moment".
"It is absolutely overwhelming, to know that we have just made it easier for people to make that journey is just amazing," Ms Savage said.
"The many guests have been both excited and thrilled by the standard of the accommodation and the proximity to services."
Cancer Council CEO Dr Andrew Penman was pleased with the result of the project.
"Cancer treatment can be very fragmented, with patients previously required to travel to different parts of the state for treatment," he said.
"It shows them they're not alone, there are other people that are travelling this journey."
