WHILE farmers in and around Dubbo continue to experience a fantastic season, other areas in Western NSW are confronting extremes at opposite ends of the spectrum, according to Landmark agronomist Jamie Taylor.

With rain predicted at Dubbo on Wednesday and Friday, which comes on the back of regular falls across the past month or so, local farmers with winter crops are tracking well for a bumper crop.
In Dubbo, there is a 90 per cent chance of five to 10 millimetres on Wednesday, followed by a 90 per cent chance of 10mm to 20mm on Friday.
In addition to this, showers are predicted for Thursday, with a 60 per cent chance of 1mm to 5mm.
While this is great news for local farmers, nearby communities such as Walgett and Brewarrina are still in the grip of one of the worst droughts in living memory.
In other areas, like Armatree, Curban and Collie, too much rain has resulted in issues like water logging, where crops are sitting in too much water.
Due to the extreme conditions confronting farmers throughout Western NSW, Mr Taylor was careful not to get too excited about the positive conditions in and around Dubbo, but he did acknowledge local farmers should be pleased with how the season had progressed so far.
"You have to be careful what you say cause you've got some parts where there is too much water and other parts are really dry," he said.
"In Dubbo and most other districts they are having a cracker of a year.
"They've got a full moisture profile leading into spring so if we get a couple of finishing rains we've got potential for a well-above average year."
Mr Taylor, who has been an agronomist with Landmark for 14 years, believes the farming country surrounding Dubbo is looking as good as ever.
"There is plenty of pasture around and while it has been a bit cold recently, it is looking really good for spring," he said.
"Commodity prices for wheat and canola have risen since planting, and the price for chick peas at the moment is great.
"Hopefully it comes together in Spring but it has got really good potential."
