Landholders given greater insight into biosecuirty

A recent biosecuity and sheep disease workshop near Brewarrina has provided landholders with the importance of maintaining high standards to stock health.

The workshop, which was held on-farm near Brewarrina on Tuesday, May 9 and organised in partnership with Sheep Connect NSW, went into great detail on a number of important topics to landholders, while it also provided a platform to have informal discussions around farming practices.

Some of the topics that were presented by industry experts to the eight landholders and community members that attended were:

· Biosecurity on your property.

· Development of an on-farm biosecurity plan for your property.

· Seasonal sheep health issues.

· Disease investigations – who to notify.

· A precautionary approach to purchasing livestock.

· A National Livestock Identification System update.

Western Local Land Services Team Leader – Agriculture, Gemma Turnbull was pleased with how the workshop ran and that landholders found it worthwhile.

“The workshop covered some very important topics that all landholders need to know about and be aware of,” Ms Turnbull said.

“The health of a landholder’s stock, particularly with where prices are at the moment, is very important to ensure both short and long term gains which is why these workshops are so important and so valuable for landholders.

“It was great to have a relaxed atmosphere in which producers were comfortable asking questions and sharing their experiences.”

Following on from this workshop and one that was held at the end of last year, a third on-farm biosecurity and sheep disease workshop will be held next month on Tuesday, June 20 in Homebush, near Balranald.
