Three decades ago a young Owen Gillespie turned up for a week of work experience with a local Cowra steel fabrication company, fast forward to 2018 and the now expert shed builder is the workshop manager.

“I got into this business straight from school,” he said. “I came over to do a week’s work experience and I’ve been here ever since.”

It must have been a good week!

“Yeah, well it was – I can still remember it actually.”

Having had a hand in the construction of too many sheds to count throughout the years, there are still plenty of reasons Owen enjoys his work at the Power Tools Plus branch in Cowra.

“There is plenty of job satisfaction,” he said. “And there is always a challenge. You never do the same thing twice. Every job we do, every shed we build, is different.”

The customer is always front of mind for the team at Power Tools Plus, and they construct sheds from scratch to suit the needs of clients.

“We are always thinking, what does the customer want and how can we achieve it?” Mr Gillespie said. “We don’t have a stock-standard shed that we just slap up every day,” he said. “Most of our customers come in with a mud map with a couple of measurements on it and we start from scratch.”

Power Tools Plus is also a Ranbuild agent so Owen and the team of seven can build everything from a single carport to an airport hangar.

“Ninety-five per cent of the time you actually talk to the person who will be managing or overseeing your job and our whole team contributes to the job, so everybody knows what’s going on,” he said.

And, given they have a fully equipped workshop, Power Tools Plus can also assist customers with farm machinery repairs, gates manufacturing, stock feeders, or custom flashing for houses.

“One of our strengths is the the versatility of the workshop and the jobs we can do. For example, it means that if a customer comes off the street and wants a certain thing made we can manufacture it,” he said.

Having a small, highly qualified team means there is no drawn out, lengthy process involved for customers.

“It’s not a stretched out process, where you have to go to a designer and come back to us,” he said.

And to make the process even simpler, Power Tools Plus can deal with council for agricultural shed approvals on a customers behalf.
