The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is hosting a Grains Research Update at the Nyngan RSL Club on Thursday, February 27.

Conference organiser John Cameron from Independent Consultants Australia Network (ICAN) said the updates are the GRDC's premier events to communicate new research outcomes that are ready for on-farm adoption.

"Growers who attend the day are exposed to a cross-section of new research outcomes - most of which are ready to influence on-farm decision making to improve the profitability and or sustainability of their farming operations," he said.

Mr Cameron said the agenda at each update location is curated with input from a panel of local farmers and grains advisers and topics are selected for their regional and seasonal relevance, practicality and applicability.

"What differentiates the updates is that they are primarily about awareness of new research outcomes and as such, they are not general extension events," he said.

"The updates are for those that have been paying attention and want to challenge themselves and keep updated with what's new."

A diverse range of topics are being addressed at the Nyngan update which includes issues such as: herbicide approval processes; farming systems and crop sequence; and changes to nutritional strategies.

A fair portion of the agenda is dedicated issues specifically to address drought recovery and related issues for management in 2020, according to Mr Cameron.

Topics will include a discussion on cereal pathology after the drought delivered by NSW DPI's Dr Steven Simpfendorfer; Jim Laycock (Incitec Pivot Ltd) and Maurie Street (Grain Orana Alliance) will discuss what nitrogen is doing in 2000 after 3 dry years with minimal mineralisation and DPI research agronomist Greg Brooke will discuss matching varieties to time of sowing and situation, with a particular focus on wide sowing windows.

To finish there will be a panel discussion about dealing with drought impacts and planning for recovery. This session will be led by Maurie Street, Penny Heuston, Jim Laycock and local grower Breil Jackson.

The update runs from 8.30am until 3pm.
