The long awaited recruitment of a district vet for the northern central west region has been filled after Dr Kate Atkinson commenced her new position recently.
Dr Atkinson is the Central West Local Land Services new veterinarian who will be based out of Coonabarabran.
Her recruitment will help to fill the northern reach of the region's district vet service after former incumbent Dr Alix Ferguson went on maternity leave in 2018.
Dr Atkinson said she was looking forward to joining the Central West LLS team and would be working on a part-time basis.
"It will be good to have time to thoroughly investigate cases and focus on vet work rather than the administrative side of private practice," she said.
"Personally, the family-friendly nature of the role with Central West Local Land Services was attractive to me and I have heard it is a good team and work environment."
After growing up in Warialda Dr Atkinson completed her Bachelor of Veterinary Science qualification at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga.
She now resides in Coolah with her young family where she previously worked for the Coolah Veterinary Services and has also worked for the Green Cross Veterinary Service in Tamworth.
Central West Local Land Services Team Leader of Animal Health Dr Belinda Edmonstone welcomed Dr Atkinson to the role.
"We are very pleased to have Dr Atkinson join our team in the northern part of our region and would encourage producers in the area to contact her should they have herd or flock animal health concerns.
"Single animal health concerns can continue to be referred to private veterinarians."
Dr Atkinson will be working from the Coonabarabran office on Tuesdays, Thursdays and every second Friday.
