Mr Lyons said the family had been quite busy with harvest and stock work, but he had found some time to sow a 30 hectare paddock with millet on spec at Mt Bodangora, some 20 kilometres east of town.
"We just have a lull between our stock work and harvesting, so I'm taking advantage of that spare time and getting some summer crop in before Christmas," he said.

Using a Case IH Puma 180 horsepower tractor, Mr Lyons was pulling a 36-tyne Bourgault 3320 Paralink Hoe Drill with a Gason air-seeder to sow millet at 12 kilograms/ha in 25cm (10 inch) spacings together with 100kg/ha blend of urea and Starter 15.
"The fertiliser is made up of 60/40 per cent urea and Starter 15 and we are utilising the seed boots to split applications at two different depths - a little lower and a little higher than the seed," Mr Lyons said.
With upwards of 40mm of rain expected in the Wellington region this week, sowing has been at an optimum time for the family who runs Merinos and Poll Hereford cattle.
