President Reuven Rivlin is stepping down after his current, seven-year term expires. Israeli presidents are not eligible for re-election.
The country's parliament, or Knesset, passed a measure on Monday calling for anyone interested in the job to submit the signatures of 10 lawmakers who back the run by May 19.
Politics watchers say likely candidates will include Isaac Herzog, the son of a former president, Chaim Herzog, and Yehudah Glick, a one-time lawmaker from the Likud party.
