Princess Beatrix, as she has been known since her abdication in 2013, got tested after coming down with "mild cold symptoms", information service RVD said on Saturday.
"The princess is at home in isolation and adheres to the rules of life for people who have tested positive," it said.
Beatrix was queen of the Netherlands for 33 years until abdicating in 2013, when her eldest son, Willem-Alexander, became king.
Last week she visited the Caribbean island of Curacao, which is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
At the time, she told reporters she had had her COVID-19 booster shot.
The Netherlands has been experiencing a record-breaking wave of COVID-19 cases that is threatening to overwhelm the country's healthcare system.
